Multi-tasking and managing the TMC relationship
Modern travel managers aren’t just experts in travel logistics – they’re multi-taskers who manage diverse responsibilities. Their top time investments reflect the complexity of their roles: managing TMC relationships (53%), developing travel program strategy (47%), and communicating with travelers (47%). Other priorities include supplier management and advanced reporting (both 44%).
Travel managers are juggling expanded duties, forging stronger ties with stakeholders, and seeking out the tools and technologies they need to thrive in today’s fast-paced corporate landscape.
According to our survey of 187 travel buyers from around the globe:
- 68% handle travel sourcing
- 51% oversee payment and expense management
- Many are taking on additional procurement and management tasks outside traditional travel
Their focus is increasingly on cost control, data analysis, and adapting to industry changes like New Distribution Capability (NDC) standards.
Success in these areas means showing results. Travel managers measure program value through savings, alignment with corporate objectives, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to share with the C-suite and other stakeholders.
Collaboration is a key part of the travel manager’s role
They work closely with finance teams (43% connect weekly or daily) and procurement departments (58% interact regularly). Growing partnerships with sustainability, security, and other cross-functional teams reflect their strategic importance to company initiatives.
“This survey reflects just how essential travel managers are becoming to organizational success,” said Jorge Cruz, executive vice president of Global Sales & Marketing at BCD. “They’re managing complex stakeholder relationships, driving sustainability and making data-informed decisions that align with broader business goals. At BCD, we’re committed to providing travel managers with the tools, technology, research and support they need to meet these new challenges head-on.”
What’s missing from the travel manager toolkit?
Six out of 10 travel managers feel they have the tools to do their job but nearly half (46%) face challenges related to budget constraints, especially for travel technology and services.
Despite this, they are most satisfied with their authority, stakeholder support, and work-life balance. However, career development remains an area where improvements are needed.
