At the Hotel Presidente InterContinental in Guadalajara, concierge Teo González draws on 16 years of experience to guide visitors toward the sights, sounds and tastes of this historic Mexican city. Here’s his expert guidance for business travelers.
What should business travelers have on hand when visiting your city?
“It’s important to bring comfortable and casual clothes—even for business travelers—as well as walking shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen. You’ll want a light sweater in the evening and an umbrella during the summer rainy season.”
What are your top restaurant recommendations for a business lunch or dinner?
“In Guadalajara, you’ll find restaurants specializing in French, Japanese, Brazilian and other international cuisine. But try the local fare. For an upscale Mexican meal, I suggest El Sacromonte (Calle Pedro Moreno 1398, Americana, 44160 Guadalajara; Ph: +52 33 3825 5447) or La Comisaria(Av Manuel Acuña 3141, Monraz, 44670 Guadalajara; Ph: +52 33 3040 0636). Eat like the locals at Kamilos 333, José Clemente Orozco 333, 44600 Guadalajara; Ph: +52 33 3825 7869). Or try Mexican-infused global cuisine at Anita Li (Avenida Inglaterra 3100, Vallarta Poniente, 44110 Guadalajara; Ph: +52 33 3647 4757).”
What’s something that surprises guests about your city?
“Guadalajara is called Mexico’s Silicon Valley. Many international technology companies have operations here.”
If business travelers only have a few hours for leisure, what must they see?
“Tour downtown area where you can see the cathedral, which is almost as old as our city; the Government Palace; and the Degollado Theatre, a historic building where you can see performances from opera to traditional Mexican dances. The Cabañas Institute, a former hospital adorned with famous murals, is a World Heritage site. Visit the nearby Libertad Market where you can purchase everything from tacos to cowboy boots.”
What’s the best option for outdoor exercise?
“Metropolitan Park is centrally located and large enough for a jog or bike ride. You’ll find tennis courts and a swimming pool in the park complex, as well. It’s a peaceful spot in the heart of the city.”
